The 4R100 had an external cooler bypass tube that routed transmission fluid from the pump output back to the transmission's return line. Sadly, these bypass tubes frequently malfunction, obstructing the passage of transmission fluid to the cooler. Another problem in the design is that, even under ideal conditions, the bypass never completely closes, which prevents all fluid from ever being transported to the cooler.
